A little goes a very long way. If you can clearly see the tint in the mud, you have enough. You are not trying to dye the compound a deep color — you are trying to make it visibly different from the wall and from your last coat.
Mud pan (roughly 1 quart) — 1 to 2 drops. That is not a typo. One drop will tint a full pan of all-purpose compound enough to see it clearly against white board under work lights.
Three gallons of compound — about one tablespoon. This is the ratio most finishers land on for skim coats and larger batches where the tint needs to stay consistent across the whole bucket.
Five-gallon bucket — one to two tablespoons, depending on how strong you want the contrast. Tint the whole bucket at once rather than pan by pan; it keeps the color consistent across the entire coat, which matters when you are trying to tell coat two from coat three three days later.
Spot repairs and punch-out — a single drop on the end of your knife, worked into the mud on the pan. For a handful of nail heads or a few screw pops, that is all you need to make every patch jump out at you when you come back to sand.

A 16.9 oz bottle holds roughly 500 drops. At normal working ratios that is enough to tint somewhere in the range of 100 to 150 five-gallon buckets of compound.
In practical terms: contractors running Never Miss daily typically go through a bottle over a season, not over a job. Homeowners doing a single room routinely report having most of the bottle left over — one customer finishing 80 sheets used two colors and still had plenty remaining. If you are buying for one bathroom, one bottle is more than you will ever use.
1. Mix the colorant into the mud, not into the water. Add the gel directly to the compound and mix it in. Do not put it in your thinning water first. Colorant added to water disperses unevenly and you end up chasing streaks through the whole bucket.
2. Thin afterward. Once the color is fully mixed and uniform, thin the compound to your working consistency. Thinning after tinting means the color stays even as the mud loosens up.
3. Mix to pancake batter consistency. Standard finishing consistency. The colorant does not change how much water your mud wants — tint it the same way you would mix it untinted.
Mixing it too dark. This is the single most common error, and it is entirely avoidable. A light, obvious tint sands clean and disappears under one coat of primer. A heavy, saturated tint can telegraph through primer and force you into a second coat — which wipes out every minute the colorant just saved you.
The rule: if you are debating whether you added enough, you added enough. Add color one drop at a time and stop the moment you can plainly see it.
Ratios are starting points, not rules. Lighting, board color and compound type all shift how much contrast you need. Mix a test pan on your first job and you will know your own number within five minutes.
