Six things that actually determine whether a colorant is any good, and how to test each one on your first bucket. Useful whether or not you end up buying ours.
The single most practical test. A colorant that requires serious mechanical mixing to distribute evenly is a colorant you will stop using by the third job, because most tinting happens in a mud pan with a knife.
How to test it: put your dose in a pan of compound and mix it with a taping knife for fifteen seconds. If you see streaks, swirls or specks of undissolved pigment, it will never be consistent on a real job. Liquids and gels win here because the pigment is already in suspension.
Your compound is formulated. Anything you add is a variable.
How to test it: tint half a pan, leave half untinted, and work both. Look for changes in body, in how it pulls under the knife, in how fast it skins over. A properly concentrated colorant is added in such small volume that you should detect no difference at all. This is where dry pigments cause real trouble — powder absorbs moisture and stiffens the mud.
The one that costs money if you get it wrong. A colorant that bleeds or telegraphs through primer forces a second primer coat across the entire job, which will erase every minute the color saved you.
How to test it: tint at your normal ratio, apply a patch, let it dry, sand it, and prime it once. Look at it in daylight. Nothing should show. Two things drive failure here: dyes rather than pigments, and simple overdosing.
Bottle size tells you almost nothing. What matters is how much compound one bottle will tint.
Ask for the ratio, not the volume. A product used at one to two drops per mud pan and roughly a tablespoon per three gallons will tint on the order of 100 to 150 five-gallon buckets from a 16.9 oz bottle. A weaker product in a bigger bottle can easily cost more per bucket while looking cheaper on the shelf.
The number to calculate: cost per five-gallon bucket tinted. That is the only figure that lets you compare two products honestly.
If you only ever want to see your mud, one color is fine. If you want to tell coat two from coat three — which is where most of the value is — you need at least two, and ideally a distinct color for the finish coat.
Look for a line where the colors are meaningfully different from each other under poor jobsite lighting, and where one of them is a neutral grey for the final pass. Worth knowing: blue and yellow mixed together give you green, so two bottles can effectively cover three coats.
Unglamorous but real. This is a small category, and availability is genuinely inconsistent — a large share of buyers arrive because their local supplier stopped carrying pre-tinted compound. If you are going to build a crew workflow around color-coding, make sure the product will still be orderable next season.
