If you have walked the drywall aisle at Home Depot or Lowe’s looking for this and come up empty, you are not missing it. Here is what is actually going on and where to get it.
Most big box stores do not stock drywall colorant, and many do not stock pre-tinted compound either. It is not an oversight — it is a shelf space decision. Colorant is a low-volume specialty item in a category dominated by 50-pound buckets, and a small bottle that lasts a contractor an entire season is not what warehouse retail is built to sell.
This is one of the most common reasons customers find us. Buyers tell us the same thing repeatedly: no supplier in their area carries tinted mud, so they went looking for a way to tint their own.
Pre-tinted joint compound — sometimes, regionally. Some markets get factory pre-tinted compound. Availability is genuinely inconsistent by region, and buyers in large parts of the country report never seeing it. If your store carries it, it is a reasonable option for a single-color workflow — though it locks you into that one color, so you cannot code coat one differently from coat two.
Chalk line dust. Available everywhere, and the traditional improvised substitute. It works after a fashion. It also clumps, disperses unevenly and changes how the mud handles — and red chalk in particular is difficult to cover. See the comparison page for the honest tradeoffs.
Concrete and masonry pigment. In the same store, usually a few aisles over. Formulated for cementitious material rather than a thin sanded finish layer, so it is hard to disperse and easy to overdose.
Drywall supply houses. Your local specialty supplier is far more likely to know what you are asking for than a general retailer. If they do not stock it, many will order it — and if you buy compound from them by the pallet, it is worth asking.

You will see this phrase used to imply that anything sold at a warehouse store is inferior. That is mostly marketing. The real difference in this category is not grade — it is that specialty products for small trades do not survive on big box shelves, so they end up sold through supply houses and direct.
What actually matters when you evaluate a colorant is whether it disperses evenly, whether it changes how your mud handles, and whether it covers under a single coat of primer. Those are testable. Where you bought it is not.
Less than you think. One 16.9 oz bottle tints roughly 100 to 150 five-gallon buckets of compound. For a single room, one bottle is far more than you will use. For a crew running color-coded coats year-round, plan on a bottle or two of each color per season.
